The 25th painting in the Longhorn Art Series, "Little Milk Thief" by Sandra Stevens, was celebrated with a dedication ceremony on October 30, 2014 in Roberts Hall at the University of Texas in Austin. In this photo (photo provided by U.T.) from left to right is Robert Mayberry (Executive Chef at U.T. who prepared longhorn beef for the appetizers!), Betty Baker (who is the owner of Bevo), me, and Executive Director Dr. Floyd Hoelting. This painting, which was commissioned by the University for their "Texas Longhorn Art Series", is the 25th and final addition to this prestigious collection which contains the works of many nationally-known western and longhorn artists such as Dalhart Windberg, Orren Mixer, and Ragan Gennusa.

This painting, which was commissioned by the University for their “Texas Longhorn Art Series”, is the 25th and final addition to this prestigious collection, which contains the works of many nationally-known western and longhorn artists such as Dalhart Windberg, Orren Mixer, and Ragan Gennusa.

The idea for this series of Longhorn art was the brainchild of Executive Director Dr. Floyd B. Hoelting in 2001 in order to preserve the legacy of the Texas Longhorn and provide a visual history of the breed that gave the University its mascot. The paintings are reproduced as large murals that hang in prominent areas in the huge residence halls. All tell a story and are meant to both entertain and educate, and panels are installed near each piece explaining the history of the scene, the artist’s background, and information about the history of the breed. They are a popular stop for students, staff, and University visitors. “The Milk Thief” was born of an idea that Dr. Hoelting had about the story of the occasional opportunist calf who has figured out how to steal a meal from a cow other than his own mother, and Sandra’s oils and canvas brought his vision to life.
